Spotting cohort drift before churn shows up
Churn is a late narrator. Earlier chapters live in activation depth and second-week return rates.
When teams wait for monthly churn to move, the intervention window has often closed. Application analytics that watch early cohort behaviour give product leads a quieter alarm.
Define the entry event once
If “signed up” sometimes means email capture and sometimes means workspace creation, every curve lies differently. Align the entry event across marketing, product, and finance before comparing weeks.
A thirty-minute Monday scan
- Compare this week’s day-7 return rate to the trailing six cohorts.
- Check one depth metric (e.g. projects created) for the same window.
- Ask an AI assistant only for contradictions with last week’s memo — not a fresh story from scratch.
- Log one hypothesis or “no action” in the signal review doc.
This ritual appears in module three of Product Signal Intelligence.
